What is Autism?

* Autism is a complex neurological disorder, typically noticed in children between 18 and 24 months of age.
* Children and adults with autism can have any of several complex neurological disorders, which lead to significant social impairments, communication difficulties and restrictive and repetitive behaviors.
* While the cause of autism is unknown-- genetics and environmental triggers are believed to play roles- the benefits of early intensive interventions has been shown to reduce disruptive behaviors
* There is no cure for autism, and its challenges, both physical and behavioral, can be lifelong.

* According to the Centers for Disease Control in 2009, autism impacts   1 in every 100 children.
* According to the Centers for Disease Control in 2007, autism impacted 1 in every 150 children.

* Autism impacts 4 times more boys than girls.
* 132, 000 Texans today are believed to have some form of autism
Autism is treatable. Children do not "outgrow" autism, but studies show that early diagnosis and intervention lead to significantly improved outcomes.
